Andy Townsend was born in England but after qualifying due to his Irish family heritage, he was first selected for the Republic of Ireland and made his debut against France in February 1989.
He starred in the 1990 World Cup, in Italy, where he played in all five of Ireland's matches as Ireland reached the quarter-finals - the country's strongest ever campaign - and scored in the famous penalty shoot-out victory against Romania.
He was captain of the Ireland squad for the 1994 World Cup and would retire from international football in 1997 after winning 70 caps and scoring seven goals.
