Pat Byrne began his playing career with Bohemians in 1974 and he would achieve remarkable success both home and abroad before retiring in 1988 when he moved into a player-manager role but he was more manager than player.

His honours list includes six League of Ireland titles, four FAI Cups, an English First Division title with Leicester, as well as a PFAI Player of the Year award, and eight caps for Ireland.

In Ireland, he represented Shelbourne, Cobh Ramblers, and St James’ Gate but at Shamrock Rovers he enjoyed incredible success as he was the heartbeat of their four-in-a-row title winners of the 1980s.

Byrne also had a stint playing in the United States where he famously nutmegged Franz Beckenbauer and he also lived some memorable days as a manager with Shels, where he won another title in 1992 - their first in 30 years - and FAI Cup in 1993, before taking charge of St James’ Gate, Shamrock Rovers, and Kilkenny City.
